Hello!

I’m Abiy Demissie

Student | University of Adelaide | Mechatronic Engineer, Computer Science

About me

A mechatronic engineer in South Australia

Passionate engineer and innovator with a proven track record in robotics, rocketry, and machine learning

An Innovative Engineer pursuing dual degrees in Mechatronic Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Adelaide. With a strong foundation, I’ve designed lunar robotic arms, worked on rockets, and mastered C++, Python, ROS, and OpenFOAM. Let’s collaborate on innovative projects. Reach out to explore new horizons.

Experience

Robotic Arm Team member

Adelaide Rover Team, Adelaide

07/2021 – 09/2023

  • Designed and built a robotic arm with 6 degrees of freedom for object manipulation in a full-scale simulated lunar mission.
  • Developed a controller using C++ and ROS to precisely manipulate the robotic arm.
  • Collaborated with the team to design and build a rover for the simulated lunar mission.

ADEPT Rocketry Division Team Member

ADEPT Rocketry Division, Adelaide

12/2020 – 09/2023

  • Designed and built 8 base rocket structures and fins.
  • Selected motors and performed rocket simulations to optimise performance
  • Physically integrated parts and worked to acquired launch certification.
  • Presented Preliminary Design Review (PDR) to project stakeholders.

AIML Summer Research Scholarship

Australian Institute for Machine Learning, Adelaide

11/2022 – 02/2023

  • Developed and implemented a behaviour tree using C++ and ROS to control the movements and actions of a quadruped robot.
  • Incorporated computer vision techniques in Python to enable the robot to recognise and respond to its environment.
  • Evaluated and optimised the behaviour tree’s efficiency, reliability, and accuracy in controlling the robot’s actions.

Modelling and Simulation, Intern

Saab Australia, Adelaide

06/2021 – 02/2022

  • Conducted a comprehensive literature review of existing hypersonic flow research.
  • Evaluated various solvers in OpenFOAM for hypersonic flow simulations and created validation simulations using C++.
  • Implemented custom shapes into validated solvers and analysed results using ParaView.
  • Produced a detailed report on the hypersonic flow simulations and presented findings to the engineering team.
